Maunga to Moana: Term 3 Holiday Program Recap 🌊⛰️

The Maunga to Moana Holiday Program is a four-day outdoor holiday programme that takes our rangatahi on an adventure along the shores of Waikorire (Pilot Bay) and around the base of Mauao (Mount Maunganui).

Throughout the programme, we offered our much-loved Waka Ama and Stand Up Paddle Boarding adventures, alongside exploring Mauao, Moturiki and other surrounding areas. Each day, an average of 12 local rangatahi from Years 7–13 joined us, connecting with Mauao Adventures through shared experiences on the water and whenua.

This one-of-a-kind programme provides a meaningful pathway into Outdoor Education, thoughtfully intertwined with Te Ao Māori. Along the way, our rangatahi learn important values such as Tikanga, Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga, grounding their experiences in cultural understanding and respect for our environment.

The stories that emerged from the week were filled with time spent on the water, exploring new places, learning new skills and having heaps of fun together. At its heart, this kaupapa is about getting our kids outside, encouraging them to try new things and building their confidence. It creates space for friendships to form, challenges to be embraced and for each rangatahi to see what they are truly capable of.

What I love most about this programme is that it’s about so much more than the activities. It’s about who we are and where we come from. Our rangatahi have the opportunity to connect with us at Mauao Adventures and the Mauao Trust Kaitiaki Group, while learning about our place and what makes our home so special.

A huge mihi to our incredible kaimahi who consistently go above and beyond for our rangatahi. This programme would not be possible without your aroha, dedication and the way you show up every single time.
